Erholung & Erleben

Werder wine region

Statistically, the fruit-friendly spring in Werder begins five days earlier than in the surrounding area. The mild climate also led to the fact that since 1985 the Wachtelberg has been home to "according to self-advertising" the northernmost vineyard in the world approved for quality wine cultivation. The mostly dry and light wine of the sandy hill can be tasted, purchased and viewed while growing.

Werder Havel - blossom city and fruit chamber: Werder is known for its fruit and the associated tree blossom festival.

Werder is located just southwest of Potsdam and Berlin in Havelland. The old town is located on an island in the Havel, which is quite wide here. Werder is also flanked by the Havel lakes Schwielowsee, Glindower See, Großer Plessower See and Großer Zernsee.

Water sports galore

Due to its location on the Havel and the Havel lakes, Werder is an excellent place for all kinds of water sports: sailing, motor boating, water skiing, paragliding and windsurfing. Furthermore, there are regular regattas and water sports events. Public bathing places are located at the lido Werder at the Plessowersee and at the lido Glindow at the Glindower See.

The Church of the Holy Spirit and the Bockwindmill characterize the silhouette.

The island town is characterized by one- and two-story town houses from the 18th and early 19th centuries and quaint fishermen's cottages. It is dominated by the Protestant Church of the Holy Spirit with its 45 meter high tower. The neo-Gothic building was erected by 1858 according to Stüler's designs and using wall remains of the medieval predecessor on the highest point of the island.
The windmill on the Mühlenberg continues to be an important landmark. It came as a replacement for the disappeared three namesakes of the hill. This specimen comes from Klossa, today a district of Jessen on the Black Elster, and was rebuilt here in 1987 due to the persistent commitment of the citizens of Werder.

Fruit-growing museum

Next to the Old Town Hall, behind a lovingly designed wrought-iron fence, is the tourist information office. In addition, the fruit-growing museum, the only one of its kind, is housed here in the former town jail. A fitting place, since the local fruit is often put in the confinement of a narrow bottle after it has become alcohol.

The tree blossom festival

This liquid fruit plays a major role in the annual Tree Blossom Festival at the end of April. Since 1879, it has become one of the largest public festivals in Germany, with half a million visitors today. At the Hohe Weg, it is not only the blossoms of the orchards around Werder that play a role.
Beforehand, a tree blossom queen is chosen every year, who, in addition to good looks, must also have knowledge about Werder and fruit growing. The tree blossom festival starts with a traditional parade and ends with a big fireworks display. The best fruit wine producers are awarded the "Golden Kruke".
